Innovation Reference Framework

Description

As the world is more and more interconnected, the competition is intensified and it is necessary to plan more quickly and at a shorter term, whilst pressure for diminishing costs is still there. The greater standardization of products and services makes the differentiation more difficult. In this globalized world, there are just four “distinctive abilities” that may constitute the base of sustainable competitive advantages:

  • Organization architecture
  • Strategic actives of the organization
  • Reputation or brand value
  • Innovation

Innovation is the only resource organizations have to create a competitive advantage which guarantees a sustainable growth.

Innovación

The challenge is to innovate to create value by doing things in a different way and, even, by doing things completely new.

There is a scientific base to manage innovation as one more process of the business. Innovation is not a random event, but a critical process, with specific steps which, controlled and managed conveniently, may provide predictable results.

Equation of Innovation: INNOVATION = Environment x (Creativity x Assumed Risk)

The Innovation Reference Framework is the answer of the CEG (NPO of the EFQM in Spain) to help an organization to understand the state of its innovation capacity. It allows comparing some organizations with others (benchmarking) and identify the existing deviations with the aim of improving the innovation capacity of the organization.

Characteristics:

  • It is based on the cause-effect logic: it helps to understand which causes give rise to the desired effects.
  • It is not prescriptive: it does not point out what to do, but where to seek references and improvement opportunities.
  • It is global: it considers all the potential dimensions and action levers.
  • It shows systematization that allows its correct application.
  • It is useful and applicable to any kind of organization.

  • As a reference for the development of the proper innovation management system.
  • As a tool to assess the innovation capacity of the proper organization and their critical partners, showing strengths and weaknesses.
